Fiz Neighbourhood Guide: Bengaluru, India
August 1, 2018 by Matthew Charles
Asia’s answer to Silicon Valley, Bengaluru is an increasingly popular destination for international travellers. A thriving nightlife scene, great food, beautiful historic buildings and spotless green spaces make for a perfect gateway to southern India.
Formerly Bangalore, Bengaluru is situated 900 meters above sea level and is nicknamed “India’s Garden City” due to the resulting cooler, more temperate climate.
There is so much to see in the Karnataka state capital but we’ve managed to whittle down our 16 favourite things to do, see, shop and eat!
Our 16 Best Places in Bengaluru, India
Bengaluru is home to some of India’s most impressive and diverse architectural treats. Top of the list are the imposing Vidhana Soudha state legislature, the colonial era tudor themed Bangalore Palace and the 18th century indo-islamic Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace.
The city is particularly notable for its wonderful green spaces. The Lal Bagh (‘Red Garden’) botanical garden is a visual delight and the superlative Cubbon Park is not to be missed: a 300 acre green paradise in the city centre, home to many other attractions including Attara Kacheri, the Technological Museum and the Bangalore Aquarium as well as thousands of species of flora and fauna.
Art lovers need look no further than Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, a sprawling complex of museums, galleries and an archive of Indian heritage as well as fine art school.
Established by three brothers almost a hundred years ago, the quick and easy bites from Mavalli Tiffin Rooms are well known in Bengaluru and there are several outlets in the city. Bombay Brasserie serve expertly crafted pan-continental dishes in a bright airy, European style setting.
There are great international eats to be found in the city too, for Japanese lovers you’ll do well to stop by the stellar Yataii.
Bars & Nightlife
A night out in Bengaluru is pretty much a guaranteed good time. There’s no better way to kick things off than to head to Jagriti Theatre for a dose of cutting edge comedy or drama. Afterwards head to one of the city’s trendy bars where you’re spoiled for choice!
For classy cocktails we recommend the sleek rooftop bar Sly Granny or the hip, vibrant Sotally Tober. King of the budding craft beer scene is Toit Brewpub where you can tour the on-site microbrewery or kick back with a pint of divine artisanal ale.
For jewellery, fabrics, regional goods and all things southern Indian, the Chikpet neighbourhood and Gandhi Bazaar market area are perfect for a day of milling around and treasure hunting. The city is also full of malls of which UB City is the biggest, most luxurious and jaw-droppingly regal in the whole region.
